As a very young teacher back in the late 90s, I was fortunate to have learned about phonics and its importance in teaching young learners/ early years students by giving them a head start and a great foundation in reading and literacy. The I Can Read Series, authored and illustrated by two of my mentors, Merci Melchor "Momcie" and Teacher Rayla Allertsen, had an effortless yet effective way of teaching Reading and English. Their Sound Foundation Approach for Beginning Readers starts with simple sound recognition, decoding, blending CV and VC blends, progressing to CVC word reading, and finally incorporating/applying the CVC words to phrases or captions containing high-frequency words all the way to reading sentences, passages, and stories. Our students enjoyed reading the funny sentences, such as "The man with a fan and a can ran after the van." The lovely classic and timeless illustrations went very well with the words and sentences.
The I CAN READ SERIES collection has taught countless young minds how to read and developed the love of reading and learning for thousands and thousands of students. As an early childhood educator in Singapore, I have utilized the ICRS philosophy and method all these years to initiate children to read, love reading and give them the confidence to say, "I can read"!
